Morningstar US Wealth Platform

Presenting my teams research to large group of stakeholders to share and get buy-in

Role — Design Lead
Stakeholders — Head of Product, Managing Director of US Wealth Platform, Sales Team, and More

IN SUMMARY

Part of my job as Design Lead was to inform stakeholders on our latest design outputs as a team. In addition to other UI focused meetings, I held quarterly Voice of the Customer sessions to create buy-in on our product direction, inform stakeholders on our latest research sessions, and give those not usually involved in the product process a chance to ask questions.

Voice of the Customer Presentation

Here is a pared down, version of my slide deck. I focused on simple slides and used my loosely crafted script to describe each part of the presentation. The structure started with context on what my team worked on this quarter and who we are, then shared videos and findings from research sessions.

Context Setting

On my team we had opportunities for both in person user testing at our Morningstar Investment Conference (MIC) and over Zoom. We had access to a 100+ customer panel that had opted into being contacted for research.

Check out the MIC research if you’re curious about some fantastic research.

Project Showcase: What Are Customers Saying

I dove into projects after, setting up a couple slides before the image to describe the goals. Then shared the tested designs with quotes overlayed, either positive or negative.

Project Showcase: Challenging Research Assumptions

I used part of the presentation as education for the diverse group of attendees. Here I showed the importance of gathering multiple types of feedback. In the quantitive data collection, the users passed each test with flying colors. However, when asked about their experience completing the task, many described issues with the designs. This feedback led to immediate changes.

Closing: Reaffirming Our Customer Commitment

At the end, I wanted to close on positive comments — the deck was much longer than what was shared here and not everything had positive advisor feedback — to reaffirm our reasons for reaching out to customers. They love Morningstar, and the ability to give feedback only improves the product they love and use everyday. My hope was also to continue to advocate for research time in sprints when necessary.
